Huw Aaron’s tale of a green blob reading to its child takes overall prize, while Janeen Hayat wins in the young readers category and SF Williamson in the older readers

This year’s Waterstones children’s book prize winner features a green blob tucking its child – a smaller green blob – into bed.

Sleep Tight, Disgusting Blob by Huw Aaron is narrated by the parent blob who, through the course of the book, tells the child blob about all the other creatures also getting ready to sleep, including a yeti, Medusa and a Minotaur.

Quiz books surge in sales to their best year ever, while nonfiction takes a slide

The success of TV spinoffs such as The 1% Club Quiz Book shows a growing market for puzzles as readers crave escape from the news cycle and endless doom-scrolling

While watching University Challenge or Only Connect, the impulse to shout out the answers comes down to a simple “human urge”, says publisher Richard Green.

That compulsion to “know useless trivia or show off knowledge” has been noticed by the publishing industry, which has met the desire by coming up with a range of products that resulted in quiz and trivia books having a bumper year in 2025, the best since records began in 1998.

The Artist by Lucy Steeds wins Waterstones book of the year

The debut novel took the top prize while The Café at the Edge of the Woods by Mikey Please was named children’s book of the year

The Artist by Lucy Steeds has been named this year’s Waterstones book of the year.

The novel, which is set in 1920s Provence and blends mystery with a love story, also took home the Waterstones debut fiction prize earlier this year, and was longlisted for the Women’s prize for fiction.
